Peridynamic modelling of clay erosion

چکیده

Experimental observations of the erosion clays indicate a high degree coupling between hydro-chemical processes in clay–water system and mechanics erosion. In contrast with volume experimental work significance swelling clay many geotechnical engineering problems, limited advances have been made predictive modelling this phenomenon. The critical step, missing existing models, is particles’ detachment from moving boundary expanding – discontinuous process. This paper presents, for first time, non-local formulation erosion, which brings together swelling, particle detached transport, into single tool. criterion, an essential element integrated model, tested against series benchmarks to show excellent agreement calculated results. model subsequently validated by comparison data behaviour compacted bentonite under several eroding environments. results: (a) clearly capacity capture concurrently free clay, particles transport environment; (b) support strongly applicability account conditions (composition velocity) environment. proposed multi-physics formulation, successfully effects on provides robust framework incorporating wide set additional couplings.

Numerical modelling of concentrated leak erosion during Hole Erosion Tests

This study focuses on the numerical modelling of concentrated leak erosion of a cohesive soil by a turbulent flow in axisymmetrical geometry, with application to the Hole Erosion Test (HET). The numerical model is based on adaptive remeshing of the water/soil interface to ensure accurate description of the mechanical phenomena occurring near the soil/water interface. The erosion law governing t...

Computer simulations and physical modelling of erosion

Research is being done to study the details and progress of soil erosion on levees and dams, including the formation and progression of rills and gullies on the slopes, and eventually to final breaching. These detailed observations of erosion differ from the typical predictions of only the maximum erosion or scour depths, for example around submerged bridge piers. Computer simulations and geote...

Stochastic Modelling of Soil Erosion and Deposition

The rate of erosion is the product of the concentration of active soil aggregates and their mean vertical velocity. The sediment concentration for a given time is proportional to the probability of detachment of first-time mobilized soil aggregates and to the probability of the deposited sediments’ redetachment. The probability of soil aggregate activation is equal to the probability of the dri...

On the modelling of internal soil erosion

Suffusion is the process whereby fine particles are moved locally an transported through a coarse layer. This is a bulk erosion, which corresponds to a source term in the mass balance equations. This bulk erosion is counter intuitive, as erosion is basicaly an interfacial process. We suggest a framework within suffusion in a clayey sand can be viewed as a clay/water interface erosion at the mic...

Linearized Theory of Peridynamic States

A state-based peridynamic material model describes internal forces acting on a point in terms of the collective deformation of all the material within a neighborhood of the point. In this paper, the response of a state-based peridynamic material is investigated for a small deformation superposed on a large deformation. The appropriate notion of a small deformation restricts the relative displac...
